Existing Buildings Study
BayREN’s Existing Buildings Study is underway! The study will provide local governments with data about the existing buildings in their jurisdictions together with their energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. The study will also identify the actions that will be needed to eliminate carbon emissions from the most common building types by 2045 and assess the effect of those actions on our most vulnerable populations.
- Phase 1 of the Existing Building Study will produce a digital dashboard that will show the number of residential and commercial building types in each Bay Area jurisdiction together with key building characteristics and estimated energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. (Estimated completion May 2024)
- Phase 2 will identify a subset of building types for further analysis and will dive deeper into those, developing estimates of additional building characteristics. (Estimated completion August 2024)
- Phase 3 will determine what actions are needed to fully decarbonize these buildings and will consider their potential equity impacts. (Estimated completion December 2024)
The digital dashboard and related reports will be posted as they become available.
